Section Manager

Used to manage sections. Import, export, and add section definitions to the project dgnlib or the active dgn.

Accessed from:
  • Ribbon: Structural > Sections > Section Manager
SettingDescription
File > Import Opens the Import Sections dialog where you can browse for dgn or dgnlib files to import section definitions. Click Open to import the selected file.

Because sections are considered to be unique by name. Any matching sections existing in the active dgn are updated with the imported definitions. New section definitions are created in the active design file if they did not exist previously.

All open section trees (such as in the placement tools) are automatically updated with the imported sections.

Members that reference a particular section maintain the reference to the section but they are not automatically updated. Existing members use the new section definition if it is modified such as by using the manipulators to change the length. New members use the new definition.

File > Export > New Opens the Export Sections dialog where you can define a name and location for the dgnlib or dgn file to export the active section definitions. Click Save to create a new project dgnlib or dgn from the seed dgnlib. All sections are exported. Existing sections are updated. New sections are created if they do not exist.
File > Export > Existing Opens the Export Sections dialog where you can define a name and location for the dgnlib or dgn file to export the active section definitions. Clicking Open updates the existing dgnlib or dgn, exports all sections, updates existing sections, and creates new sections if they do not exist.
Add > Table Section Opens the Table Section Manager where you can select sections from a catalog, and add them directly to the active design file without storing them in the project dgnlib.
Add > Parametric Section Opens the Parametric Section Editor where you can create sections parametrically (by selecting a section type and populating dimension properties), and add them directly to the active design file without storing them in the project dgnlib.
Add > Custom Section Opens the Custom Section Editor where you can create sections by selecting MicroStation elements (e.g. AISC code), and add them directly to the active design file without storing them in the project dgnlib.
Add > Varying Section Opens the Varying Section Editor where you can create tapered sections, and add them directly to the active design file without storing them in the project dgnlib.
Add > Built Up Section Opens the Built Up Section Editor where you can create sections that are aggregations of other sections, and add them directly to the active design file without storing them in the project dgnlib.
Preview Displays a 3D preview of the active section definition including it's placement point and member line. You can change the view rotation and the rendering mode using the drop down toolbars in the top left corner of the preview panel.
Tip: If you do not see the member line (yellow by default), try changing the display to wireframe.
Available Sections Lists sections defined in the project dgnlib or active dgn by category. A right click menu provides options to Delete or Rename selected sections.
Note: A section may be deleted only if it is not referenced by another object in the model. Sections are checked both for references by IsmCurveMembers as well as references from "compound" sections such as a varying sections or built up sections. If a section has references, Delete is disabled. Renaming is permitted even if a section is in use since the name is a cosmetic property. The relationships are based on the EC instances so the name is not used.
